Coastal development

Coastal development refers to the construction and expansion of infrastructure, residential areas, commercial properties, and other human-made structures along coastal areas. This often comes at the cost of significant environmental degradation and the loss of critical marine and coastal habitats.

How does this affect marine life?

Coastal development destroys critical habitats like mangroves, seagrasses, coral reefs, and wetlands, which are essential for providing shelter, breeding grounds, and food for many marine species.

Besides that, coastal development increases land runoff, carrying pollutants like pesticides and plastics into the ocean, which can poison marine life and disrupt ecosystems. Excess nutrients in the runoff can cause algal blooms, depleting oxygen in the water and creating “dead zones” where marine life cannot survive.
