Reaching maritime sustainability goals through relevant ocean projects

Written by Marte Greefs

At Go Ocean, we restore ecosystems and biodiversity along coastlines and in the ocean. Unmistakably, our work therefore aligns seamlessly with the sustainability and marketing strategies of maritime companies. Whether these companies are looking to offset their CO₂ emissions, reduce negative impacts, or find the perfect fit between their company’s story and an ocean project, Go Ocean is here to help. Because we believe that every maritime company should be able to actively contribute to ocean health while generating business value directly linked to their core operations.

The mission

Our mission is simple yet urgent: to restore and improve the ocean’s health and biodiversity. A healthy ocean means a healthy planet on which life and economy can thrive. Yet despite its importance, Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water – remains one of the most underfunded goals.

That’s where Go Ocean steps in. We offer companies transparent, tangible projects to invest in, ranging from coral or mangrove restoration in the Global South to shellfish reefs and seagrass in our more northern waters. And wherever possible, we connect ecological restoration with socioeconomic benefits, community involvement, and ocean awareness.

Environmental services with a clear return

Every maritime company faces similar sustainability challenges, requiring innovation, bold decisions, and positive impact initiatives. Reducing negative impact and transforming internal processes for the better is one side.

To offset the unavoidable negative impact, create a positive one, or just take a lead in sustainability in your sector, that’s exactly where Go Ocean can help out. We ensure our projects not only support the planet but also strengthen your sustainability and marketing strategies. This is possible because you cannot unlink them from a healthy maritime sector.

Your returns can include:

  • Verified CO₂ offsets
  • Risk mitigation in the field ánd in a changing regulatory landscape
  • A more sustainable value chain
  • Robust impact data for reporting and compliance
  • A stronger brand reputation
  • Enhanced employer branding

For a long time, we hesitated to link our restoration projects with monetary business returns. Today, the evidence is clear: if done right, these projects deliver tangible competitive advantages, cost savings, value creation, reduced turnover, and higher talent retention.

Companies already pioneering with us

No two companies are alike, and no two collaborations are the same. In every partnership, we carefully explore the ideal project fit, making sure it connects to your business objectives.

We’re not just talking — ocean-linked companies are already taking action with Go Ocean. For example:

  • Otary – with windfarms in the North Sea: contributed to a biodiversity project at the Belgian coastline.
  • Komatsu – closely involved in maritime construction: contributed to a biodiversity project at the Belgian coastline and organized an ocean-themed teambuilding.
  • Blue Cluster and OPUA – connecting a variety of maritime companies: supporting their favorite projects through philanthropic donations linked with events.
  • Seabridge – transport over water: supported seagrass restoration in the North Sea, benefitting biodiversity and climate action.
  • Various companies, especially those with higher emissions, are offsetting with relevant ocean projects: they plant their own mangrove forests and secure blue carbon credits for the next 20 years.

Why does it matter?

Sometimes maritime companies ask us: Can we really make a difference in an ocean this vast? Our answer: absolutely. The ocean is one connected system. Every local action contributes to global change.

Think of it this way: move one stone in a river, and the ripple effect spreads far beyond. That’s the power of restoration. That’s why your contribution matters. And that’s why working with Go Ocean is not just good for the ocean — it’s good for your business.

Beyond restoration: other types of collaboration

While large-scale restoration is our core focus, we also know that sometimes a small step can spark a big change. That’s why we’ve developed a portfolio of ocean-themed products and services that can be seamlessly integrated into your existing activities:

These initiatives are low-threshold but high-impact, and they complement any sustainability strategy.
