Naiad Foundation

Naiad Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Antwerp, is on a mission to drive real environmental and social change. In 2024, they kicked off a long-term partnership with Go Ocean to bring marine ecosystems back to life through science and community action. What connects Go Ocean and Naiad Foundation is simple but powerful: the belief that we can only tackle climate change and biodiversity loss by getting our hands wet and working with nature itself.

The partnership

Naiad Foundation is committing €750,000 over five years to fuel Go Ocean’s mission. That kind of multi-year support is a game-changer: it gives the stability to plan big, long-term ecological projects and the momentum to scale positive impact much faster. In the first two years, the budget will flow into three major focus areas:

  1. Seagrass restoration in Scotland – About half of the annual budget is going into restoring seagrass meadows in Scotland. The funding also supports the growth of the project team and in-depth research into the expansion possibilities, biodiversity benefits, and carbon offsetting potential of seagrass restoration. Seagrass stores carbon up to 35 times more efficiently than some land forests. That makes it one of the most powerful (and overlooked) allies in the fight against climate change. The data and research this project produces will give us the science we need to inspire companies, governments, and communities to back seagrass on a much bigger scale.
  2. Biodiversity projects in Belgium and the Netherlands – Around 35% of the budget is fueling projects closer to home — offshore and along the North Sea coast. Think oyster reefs, mussel beds, and tube worm reefs: natural reef systems that bring marine life back, improve water quality, and protect our coastlines from the growing risks of climate change. These projects don’t just create habitats; they make our seas more resilient, diverse, and alive.
  3. Supporting the Global South – The rest of the funding goes to high-impact restoration in developing regions. Here, it’s about more than climate and biodiversity: it’s about creating social and economic benefits too. By working directly with local communities, these projects deliver ecological restoration while tackling inequalities and empowering people on the ground.

Broad awareness creation

Every new project is also a new story to tell. Alongside the restoration work, Go Ocean is rolling out awareness campaigns and communication to bring marine restoration into the spotlight. With Naiad Foundation’s backing, we’re helping to shift mindsets in Belgium towards a true “Planet Ocean” perspective — showing people and companies why ocean health matters to all of us and what we can actually do to improve it.

Leadership

In October 2025, Naiad Foundation will join Go Ocean’s entrepreneurial field trip to Scotland. This hands-on experience brings business leaders right into the water (literally) to see restoration in action. It’s a mix of fieldwork, learning, and networking — designed to spark leadership and commitment for the ocean. Naiad Foundation’s active role shows exactly how serious they are: they don’t just want to fund change, they want to live it and inspire others to follow.

Why this partnership works

This collaboration works because it’s built on:

  • Long-term commitment that gives projects the space to grow and thrive.
  • Science-based restoration backed by monitoring and measurable results.
  • A shared mission that blends nature-based solutions, community involvement, and real ecological impact.
